Poll Predicts Disaster in Birmingham Local Election
Sir Keir Starmer faces his largest ever defeat in tomorrow’s Birmingham local election, according to recent polling. The research group More in Common suggests a historic shift is coming. Consequently, for the first time, Reform UK and Independents may replace traditional powerhouses.
There are 101 council seats contested in the Birmingham local election on May 7. Specifically, experts predict Reform UK will secure 47 seats. This would make them the largest party in the city. Meanwhile, Labour is forecast to win only 14 seats.
A Devastating Blow for Labour
The predicted results represent a total collapse for the Labour party. In 2022, they held a strong majority with 65 seats. However, this new poll shows a loss of 51 seats. This would be the most significant defeat in the council's history.
Conservative support is also expected to crater. Polling suggests they will drop from 22 seats to just six. In addition, the Green Party could see major growth. They are forecast to win 12 seats, up from just two.
First Past the Post Dynamics
The Birmingham local election uses the 'first past the post' system. Therefore, candidates can win with a small margin. Reform UK holds a 26% vote share in the latest forecasts. In contrast, this is only 3% higher than Labour's projected share.
Furthermore, despite the narrow vote gap, the seat distribution remains lopsided. Independent candidates are also set for a massive night. As a result, they could become the second-largest group with 17 seats.
Voters will head to the polls across 136 councils in England tomorrow. Nevertheless, all eyes remain on the Birmingham local election results. This city has long been a Labour stronghold. Ultimately, a wipeout here would signal a major shift in UK politics.
